Bad breath isn?t something anyone wants to deal with, either in themselves or in someone else. Despite our desires, however, it really is a fact of life at least occasionally. While some people certainly do suffer from chronic bad breath, most of us don?t. Along with basic oral hygiene, I?ve outlined a few ideas below for people suffering from isolated instances.

I should make it clear, however, that if you do follow the basic oral hygiene below and still suffer from chronic bad breath, you should consult your family doctor. Bad breath can actually be a symptom of many serious illnesses and it?s something you should have your doctor explore it. This article is geared towards the average person who just needs the occasional freshening up.

If you?re not keeping up on your oral hygiene, then you have no right to complain about your bad breath, so let?s start there. At bare minimum, you should be brushing your teeth every morning and every evening. You should probably do more than that, but we?ll call this the absolute bottom line. Also, when you brush, you should brush over your tongue as well because it can play host and home to all kinds of little nasties.

Once you?ve taken care of the bottom line, you need to know that many things throughout the day are going to have an effect on your breath. The most effective (albeit anal-retentive) option is to carry a toothbrush and toothpaste with you at all times. This way, after a drink, snack or cigarette, you can fully brush your teeth.

For most of us, however, we prefer a pocket sized option that doesn?t require a quick trip to the bathroom. Generally, the options we have under these criteria are gum, mints and mint-strips.

Gum loses its flavor and effect quickly and the actual act of chewing is generally considered unprofessional, at best, and downright rude, at worst. You also have to make sure that you have ready access to a waste basket and regular gum chewing can make you feel bloated, as you take in quite a bit of air while you chew.

Mints are better as they last longer and don?t have the same social stigma, but they can often take quite awhile to dissolve. We can shortcut this by biting through them, but this usually leads to a mint-burst that is downright painful. Also, mints tend to be the highest in calories of our three options, which makes them the least healthy.

Mint strips are my choice as they combine the best of both worlds. They work fast, like gum, but dissolve in an instant unlike mints. They are almost free of calories, require no trashcan and tend to last for a long time. The tiny packaging is the final bonus which steers me towards them.

Bad breath is a very common and embarrassing problem. It is one of those things that somehow do not fall under natural causes. It is also something that gives an impression of bad personal hygiene. People find it difficult to control their reaction to the bad breath of another person. However there are a few simple steps that can be taken to counter bad breath effectively.

Scrape the tongue

The biggest reason for bad breath is the presence of bacteria on the tongue. If your tongue shows a white layer instead of a healthy pink then you can be sure that there is a bacteria problem. Use a soft toothbrush or a tongue scraper (you can find toothbrushes with tongue scrapers on the backside of the bristles). Scrape gently with plenty of rinsing to get that white layer off and rid yourself of oral bacteria.

Gargling

Once you have scraped off all the bacteria you should gargle using diluted hydrogen peroxide. Try to gargle for at least forty five seconds. Hydrogen peroxide creates a lot of foam, do not spit it out. The foam is essential for killing the bacteria. Note that it is not advisable to use hydrogen peroxide more than twice a day (and in diluted form only). To be careful use it every 3 days or twice a week. Hydrogen peroxide is corrosive and can eat into the enamel of your teeth.

Eat better

All foods undergo chemical reactions when they are being digested and they all emit some sort of gas in the process. These gases need to escape from your body and they can do so using various openings. Pores in the skin, flatulence, or through exhalation. What this means is that your mouth will mostly smell of what you eat. To overcome the smell of strong foods use countering elements like peppermint tea, Moroccan mint, jasmine, hibiscus, and lemon balm. When using any of these substances do not add sugar as it encourages the growth of bacteria. Also include fresh foods like ginger, parsley, cilantro, and scallion to your regular meals. Make certain that these additives are not cooked with the food but added separately in their raw state. When you eat them raw they help to maintain a balance in colon bacteria.

Colon cleansing

The colon is attached to the mouth although it is quite far away. If it is not properly cleansed then it makes an ideal place for bacteria to breed and cause bad breath. Bran is one edible substance that can help cleanse the colon. A clean colon can result in non-smelling gaseous emissions from all body openings. If necessary try a herbal laxative. Do not take over the counter drugs for bowel movements without consulting your doctor. When taken without real need, laxatives can weaken the colon.

Lastly, make sure you do not have a fungal infection. Even if you don't think you have such an infection a simple home test can help you make certain. Spit into and empty glass or dish and leave this to set for a twenty-four hours. If, at the end of that period, you see a stringy substance left behind after water evaporation then it means a fungal infection.

Just take a few precautions and you do not have to put up with bad breath.

A Simple Bad Breath Solution That's In Your Kitchen Cupboard

One of the unfortunate things about bad breath is that we may not know we have bad breath until we speak. By this stage, we will have engaged in a social or business situation where we may cause people to recoil from us - even if subconsciously - at the very moment when we are trying to improve our relationship with them. If this group knows us well, this is less of a problem. Friends are more likely to be forgiving of the little things about us that perhaps jar them. But if we don't know these people well, we may have just sullied the all important first impressions that are the crucial beginning of any relationship - social, intimate, or business.

Bad breath is undoubtably a problem - frustrating, and usually recurring. Perhaps it gets covered up by mints and candy, but there are situations when we cannot always be chewing on gum. Its unprofessional in a business meeting, impractical when we're having lunch, and impossible when we're intimate with someone.

Bad breath is caused by bacteria. More specifically, the volatile sulfur compounds that are the result of the breakdown of two sulfur containing amino acids, methionine and cysteine. These bacteria live in the mouth and throat, and because they are anaerobic bacteria, they do not live on the surface of the tongue. They actually exist in the fibers which the tongue is made up of.

The bad news is that you cannot get rid of these bacteria permanently, despite the promise of some bad breath treatments. And you actually wouldn't want to, despite the inconvenience they cause when they are working overtime to produce bitter tasting and bad smelling metabolic byproducts. These bacteria are actually part of the digestive process, which begins in the mouth. You need them, and they need you!

There are things that make this normal aspect of digestion worse, however. Foods like dairy products and eating too much protein. That's why one very common side effect of the high protein Atkins diet is bad breath. The proteins in these foods gives these bacteria more 'fuel' to create even more volatile sulfur compounds. They are just doing their job, with very unpleasant after effects. And coffee contains acids which allow the bacteria to multiply. So for the social situations where you want to minimize bad breath, its a simple thing to avoid these foods and drinks.

Tea, on the other hand, can stop the growth of these bacteria. Researchers in Chicago at the University of Illinois have found that the polyphenols in tea can not only reduce the output of the volatile sulfur compounds by 30%, but they make it harder for the bacteria to multiply. The polyphenols active in this bad breath remedy are catechins and theaflavins. Catchetins are found in both green and black tea, and theaflavins are only found in black tea. So a strategy to prevent bad breath might be to avoid the alcohol at important lunches and dinners, and drink black tea instead! Alcohol, because it dries your mouth out, will aggravate bad breath.

Bad Breath - Is It Destroying Your Confidence?

Whilst this may sound like a weird heading to be linking confidence and bad breath together many sufferers of breath problems will know exactly what I mean.

How often have you turned your head slightly when talking to someone to avoid breathing on them? Or had someone comment on how bad your breath smells. It is like being slapped in the face. No body likes it including me. But there is a way to control it or even stop it all together.

In the following page you will find out exactly how I overcome bad breath and some of the finer details about breath related problems.

What causes Bad Breath?

In most cases bad breath (halitosis) is caused by or related to oral bacteria. The wastes of oral bacteria are actually sulfur compounds and it is usually these compounds that will be the cause of your bad breath.

The build up of plaque can also largely contribute to the production of oral bacteria. It only takes a layer of .1 to .2 of a millimeter of plaque to provide an environment in which this bacteria can flourish.

What about foods, can they be a cause?

Absolutely, eating foods and drinks such as garlic, onions, cheese, orange juice, soda, meat product, dairy products and high protein foods.

Also when food becomes lodged between your teeth and around the gums it lends a very big part in the production of oral bacteria.

How do I treat bad breath.

In almost all cases bad breath is caused by a problem of some sort in the mouth. In which case it stands to reason that a visit to the dentist can help determine what is wrong. In the case that you may need dental treatment this may be the cause of your problems.

However if no oral cause can be found then it is possible that a trip to a clinic or practice that specializes in bad breath is required.

Bad Breath - What you can do to prevent it.

That being said I suffered a rude awakening when my girlfriend started commenting on my breath problems (being a dental nurse I respect her opinion in this regard). So I consulted my dentist.

I was told to floss regularly, shown how to brush properly and also suggested I use closys II as a mouth wash.

I have not had bad breath since I have started using Closys II and in my opinion is the best mouthwash out. To read more about Closys II go to http://www.toothwhiteningaustralia.com.au/bad-breath-treatment.php

Here are the steps outlined below that you can use to prevent bad breath

  • Brush regularly twice a day if possible.
  • Ensure that you floss each day.
  • Make sure you drink enough water (This can help flush your mouth of unwanted food particles)
  • Use a mouthwash after brushing. For best effect do this at night time.

I have followed these simple steps and no longer worry about bad breath. Neither will you if you put some of the points in this article to good use.
