Is there a connection between bad breath and acid reflux? Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition where stomach contents return up the esophagus, sometimes all the way to the mouth, causing heartburn and an unpleasant bitter taste. Many professionals and health writers list GERD as a possible cause of bad breath, but few go into any detail about what produces the bad odor. Given that there may be a demonstrable connection, there are a couple of explanations we can consider.

First, symptoms of bad breath and acid reflux often strike after consumption of a large meal. Many foods, though we love to eat them, don't smell too good on the breath afterwards. Secondly, it's no secret that one's stomach contents don't smell too good. The stomach is an acid environment where foods start to break down in preparation for digestive processes in the intestine. If enough time has passed since the food was consumed, stomach contents that return up the esophagus in a case of GERD will have the sharp acidic smell of vomit - an unpleasant odor producing an atypical halitosis and suggesting a link between bad breath and acid reflux.

Thirdly, in cases of chronic GERD, acid stomach liquids repeatedly come in contact with, and burn, the lining of the esophagus. Because the damage recurs frequently, the tissue never has time to heal completely and is thus chronically irritated with continual production of dead tissue. Dead tissue has an unpleasant odor, and when it is present in the esophagus, it's likely to produce an indirect connection between bad breath and acid reflux.

But, the truth is, there doesn't seem to be a really strong correlation between bad breath and acid reflux itself. A relatively low percentage of people with GERD experience chronic halitosis. Instead, researchers recently reported at the 71st Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology (2006) that there is an apparent connection between proton pump inhibitors (drugs commonly used to treat GERD), and chronic bad breath. The drugs, it seems, may cause an overgrowth of odor producing bacteria in the mouth - and anaerobic odor producing bacteria in the mouth are by far the most common cause of chronic halitosis.

1. A dirty mouth. "Ninety percent of mouth odors come from mouth itself--either from the food you eat or bacteria that's already there," says Dr. Richard H. Price spokesman for American Dental Association. "Mouth odor is like any other body odor--the result of microbes living in the body giving off byproducts." In the mouth, this means bacteria that normally live in the mouth interact with food particles, blood, tissue, etc., to create volatile (i.e., stinky) sulfur compounds. If you don't clean properly, the bacteria build up, and next thing you know--that's not toothpaste on your tongue.

2.A mouth out of balance. Certain mouth conditions can exacerbate bacterial growth and odor, such as gum disease and dry mouth. Gum disease causes bloody gums, creating more elements for those pesky bacteria to putrefy. But it is a dry mouth that is the more common cause of bad breath. Saliva helps flush out the mouth, keeping bacteria moving so they don't settle down and multiply, while drier mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria. In spring and summer, allergy medications can dry you out; in winter, dry heat tends to be the culprit.

3. Stinky foods. If it stinks going in, chances are it's going to stink coming out. The obvious offenders are onions, garlic, alcohol and tobacco. And foods don't only create a stench in the mouth. "Plant oils are absorbed and the byproducts enter your bloodstream so you are actually breathing the odors out via your lungs three to four hours later," says Jeannie Moloo, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. 5. Illness.Occasionally, bad breath can be a sign of a more serious illness. The most common systemic causes of bad breath are diabetes or GERD (or gastro esophageal reflux disease). Diabetes can also cause ketosis, and the resulting bad breath is sometimes one of first symptoms that lead to diagnosis. GERD is a backflow of acid from the stomach to the esophagus. Less common but possible are liver or kidney disease--when toxins from these organs are excreted through the lungs, causing bad breath.

"You can brush and floss till the cows come home, but it won't help unless you get way back," says Price of the American Dental Association. A tongue scraper is available at most drugstores. Price swears it helped him when he was suffering from bad breath (not something you want in your dentist, he points out). "Now I smell like a petunia," he says. "For most of us, brushing, flossing and tongue scraping twice a day will control bad breath."

2.Keep it moist. The best way to keep the right saliva balance is to drink plenty of water or liquids. To prevent dry mouth in winter, use a humidifier. If you snore or suffer from postnasal drip, try saline nasal spray to keep nasal passages moist.

3. Watch what you eat. Avoiding the main offenders (onion, garlic, tobacco, coffee, etc.) is the best way to avoid food-related bad breath. Dietitian Moloo also cites research that suggests certain foods can help: "Two cups of tea a day can prevent bad breath for some. The polyphenols, a plant chemical in tea, may prevent growth of bacteria responsible for bad breath." You can also chew parsley, which seems to curb offending smells from other foods and bacteria. And cranberries may eliminate offensive smells and make the bacteria less sticky, which makes plaque is less likely to form. Price says sugarless gums that contain xylotol may kill some bacteria and help reduce plaque.

4.Eat some carbs.Apparently the only way to help the ketosis caused by low-carb diets is ... to eat some carbs. Moloo recommends fruits, vegetables and whole grains over frosted doughnuts.

5. See your doctor. If tongue scraping and carbo-loading doesn't do the trick, check with your doctor to see if he or she suspects a more serious cause. Diabetes, GERD or other diseases require specific diagnoses and treatments.

Other symptoms of ketoacidosis include thirst and frequent urination, fatigue, nausea, aching muscles, sleepiness, coma, and rapid breathing. If you have, or suspect you have, diabetes and bad breath is associated with any of these symptoms, seek medical attention urgently.

It's possible, of course that one might have diabetes and bad breath that is not caused by ketoacidosis but arises from some other underlying problem. How to check if your breath is kiss-able fresh or is bad enough to stop a clock on the other side of the world no matter how clean and white your smile

OK, here?s the scoop on bad breath or as it's more formally called, halitosis. Smelly breath has ruined more romantic evenings than your white and bright teeth will ever make happen. It?s not to the point where I would say that if you ever hope to have a romantic, hot, passionate night with your favorite loved one, you're got to have a fresh mouth, but it?s close.

Notice this will NOT be a typical spiel saying that breath doesn't matter considering what?s done during those romantic adventures. Considering where our mouths usually end up during those trysts with our significant other, I can hear some guys say what?s the difference?

The difference is that someone with clean and fresh breath has a much greater chance of being kissed than someone with halitosis. To get interest from someone, we can't offend them! This means clean is preferred to smelly, and this goes especially for your mouth and fingernails. A clean mouth with white teeth and a great smile suggest a healthy person. Odors, especially here in the United States have a negative connotation and are not considered positive.

So without further ado, let?s take a look at how we can check our breath. One of the best ways to tell if you're breath is "less than great", is to ask a friend or close relative to just smell your mouth. Have them check to be sure the smell is coming from your mouth and NOT your nose. If the odor is from your nose, it's probably coming from your upper nasal passage. This can indicate an infection or sinus problem that should probably be looked at by your doctor. If the odor is from your mouth, chances are that a good cleaning can make your breath smell fresh and pleasant. An effective halitosis treatment is good dental health. Good breath by the way is actually neutral in smell.

The main causes of halitosis is poor dental hygiene. Food particles get stuck between your teeth then start to rot and smell. By regularly seeing your dentist and keeping up a regimen of brushing and flossing daily, halitosis will disappear as if by magic.

Next, run the saliva on the back of your hand and wait about a minute then smell your hand. If not something YOU would like to kiss, time to get out the toothbrush, dental floss and mouthwash.

You can have the whitest teeth and a bright smile but without dealing with bad mouth odor, no one will want to get around you. don't let dull teeth or smelly breath lower your kiss-ability potential!

While some people certainly do suffer from chronic bad breath, most of us don't. Along with basic oral hygiene, I've outlined a few ideas below for people suffering from isolated instances.

I should make it clear, however, that if you do follow the basic oral hygiene below and still suffer from chronic bad breath, you should consult your family doctor. Bad breath can actually be a symptom of many serious illnesses and it's something you should have your doctor explore it. This article is geared towards the average person who just needs the occasional freshening up.

If you're not keeping up on your oral hygiene, then you have no right to complain about your bad breath, so let's start there. At bare minimum, you should be brushing your teeth every morning and every evening. You should probably do more than that, but we'll call this the absolute bottom line. Also, when you brush, you should brush over your tongue as well because it can play host and home to all kinds of little nasties.

Once you've taken care of the bottom line, you need to know that many things throughout the day are going to have an effect on your breath. The most effective (albeit anal-retentive) option is to carry a toothbrush and toothpaste with you at all times. This way, after a drink, snack or cigarette, you can fully brush your teeth.

For most of us, however, we prefer a pocket sized option that doesn't require a quick trip to the bathroom. Generally, the options we have under these criteria are gum, mints and mint-strips.

Gum loses its flavor and effect quickly and the actual act of chewing is generally considered unprofessional, at best, and downright rude, at worst. You also have to make sure that you have ready access to a waste basket and regular gum chewing can make you feel bloated, as you take in quite a bit of air while you chew.

Mints are better as they last longer and don't have the same social stigma, but they can often take quite awhile to dissolve. We can shortcut this by biting through them, but this usually leads to a mint-burst that is downright painful. Also, mints tend to be the highest in calories of our three options, which makes them the least healthy.

Mint strips are my choice as they combine the best of both worlds. They work fast, like gum, but dissolve in an instant unlike mints. They are almost free of calories, require no trashcan and tend to last for a long time. The tiny packaging is the final bonus which steers me towards them.

Say you are at a party and all of a sudden you get that stinging feeling in your throat.
