Bad Breath: Five Causes and Five Cures

Top Five Causes of Bad Breath

1. A dirty mouth. "Ninety percent of mouth odors come from mouth itself--either from the food you eat or bacteria that's already there," says Dr. Richard H. Price spokesman for American Dental Association. "Mouth odor is like any other body odor--the result of microbes living in the body giving off byproducts." In the mouth, this means bacteria that normally live in the mouth interact with food particles, blood, tissue, etc., to create volatile (i.e., stinky) sulfur compounds. If you don't clean properly, the bacteria build up, and next thing you know--that's not toothpaste on your tongue.

2.A mouth out of balance. Certain mouth conditions can exacerbate bacterial growth and odor, such as gum disease and dry mouth. Gum disease causes bloody gums, creating more elements for those pesky bacteria to putrefy. But it is a dry mouth that is the more common cause of bad breath. Saliva helps flush out the mouth, keeping bacteria moving so they don't settle down and multiply, while drier mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria. In spring and summer, allergy medications can dry you out; in winter, dry heat tends to be the culprit.

3. Stinky foods. If it stinks going in, chances are it's going to stink coming out. The obvious offenders are onions, garlic, alcohol and tobacco. And foods don't only create a stench in the mouth. "Plant oils are absorbed and the byproducts enter your bloodstream so you are actually breathing the odors out via your lungs three to four hours later," says Jeannie Moloo, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. [Full disclosure: Moloo is the author's cousin.]

4.Not enough carbs. You look great after four weeks on Atkins, so how come you still can't get a date? High-protein, low-carb diets cause your body to burn stored fats for fuel instead of carbs and can lead to a condition called ketosis. "As fat burns, ketones build up in the body, and some are released through breath,"explains Moloo. "Unfortunately ketones don't smell particularly good." And bad breath trumps six-pack abs.

5. Illness.Occasionally, bad breath can be a sign of a more serious illness. The most common systemic causes of bad breath are diabetes or GERD (or gastro esophageal reflux disease). Diabetes can also cause ketosis, and the resulting bad breath is sometimes one of first symptoms that lead to diagnosis. GERD is a backflow of acid from the stomach to the esophagus. Less common but possible are liver or kidney disease--when toxins from these organs are excreted through the lungs, causing bad breath.

Top Five Cures

1.Keep it clean. Gum, breath mints, mouthwash ... these are all helpful stopgaps, but they won't cure bad breath. The way to get rid of bad breath for most of us is to brush, floss and tongue scrape twice a day. Yes, for fresh breath, the key is tongue scraping. "You can brush and floss till the cows come home, but it won't help unless you get way back," says Price of the American Dental Association. A tongue scraper is available at most drugstores. Price swears it helped him when he was suffering from bad breath (not something you want in your dentist, he points out). "Now I smell like a petunia," he says. "For most of us, brushing, flossing and tongue scraping twice a day will control bad breath."

2.Keep it moist. The best way to keep the right saliva balance is to drink plenty of water or liquids. To prevent dry mouth in winter, use a humidifier. If you snore or suffer from postnasal drip, try saline nasal spray to keep nasal passages moist.

3. Watch what you eat. Avoiding the main offenders (onion, garlic, tobacco, coffee, etc.) is the best way to avoid food-related bad breath. Dietitian Moloo also cites research that suggests certain foods can help: "Two cups of tea a day can prevent bad breath for some. The polyphenols, a plant chemical in tea, may prevent growth of bacteria responsible for bad breath." You can also chew parsley, which seems to curb offending smells from other foods and bacteria. And cranberries may eliminate offensive smells and make the bacteria less sticky, which makes plaque is less likely to form. Price says sugarless gums that contain xylotol may kill some bacteria and help reduce plaque.

4.Eat some carbs.Apparently the only way to help the ketosis caused by low-carb diets is ... to eat some carbs. Moloo recommends fruits, vegetables and whole grains over frosted doughnuts.

5. See your doctor. If tongue scraping and carbo-loading doesn't do the trick, check with your doctor to see if he or she suspects a more serious cause. Diabetes, GERD or other diseases require specific diagnoses and treatments.

Bad Breath Cat-Astrophe

Are you dealing with cat breath that's nothing short of "cat-astrophic?" Fear not - for your days spent living with horrid halitosis are nearing a much anticipated end.

Nasty feline breath is, unfortunately, pretty common and is probably caused by dental disease. Basically, what's happening is bacteria is building up along the gum line, leading to gingivitis, inflamed gums, or infection. If left unchecked, gingivitis can eventually cause periodontitis, an inflammation of deeper tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth, and in severe cases, infection in the mouth can spread through the bloodstream to other parts of the body!

So which cats are at risk for dental disease? Most pets show early signs of dental disease soon after reaching maturity, especially if they haven't been getting preventive care. But other factors can influence your pet's risk for dental disease. Here are just a few:

* Diet - Dry foods leave less residue on the teeth compared with soft foods. Chewing hard kibble helps keep your pet's teeth clean, but it isn't always enough. Ask your veterinarian about a specially formulated diet for cats that reduces tartar formation.

* Chemistry - One of the main factors that could lead to tartar buildup is your cat's individual mouth chemistry. Some pets need yearly dental cleanings and others need them only every few years.

* Metabolic Diseases - Certain metabolic diseases, like hypothyroidism or kidney disease, can boost your pet's risk of dental disease. Diseases that wreak havoc on the immune system, like feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus infections, can also play a role.

So aside from the funky feline breath, how can cat lovers tell if their precious pet has dental disease? Keep an eye out for any of these signs:
* Red, swollen gums
* Bleeding gums
* Little or no interest in food
* Trouble eating
* Drooling
* Loose or broken teeth
* Heavy tartar deposits on teeth
* Swelling or a draining hole under the eye

If you notice any of these, get your cat to the vet ASAP.

Aside from weekly home cleanings and yearly cleanings at the vet's office, make sure your cat has a lot of dental chew toys and rawhide strips. While those alone won't prevent dental disease, they do help remove plaque. And that means your cat's bad breath will soon be a distant memory!

Bad Breath is actually very natural though not very pleasant. Although it can be caused by many different serious illnesses, we'll only consider the garden variety much more common Halitosis or Stinky Breath.

First healthy breath should generally be neutral in odor. That is, not sweet, sour, or have a definite "aroma."

Were you ever introduced to someone who had an odor or smelly breath? We're not talking strong food like onions but a rotten smell. The problem may have been a case of bad breath.

Most cases of halitosis is due to decayed food particles between your teeth and at the gum line. The bacteria in your mouth causes the food to decay giving off the gaseous odors. It's especially noticeable in the morning because we've had hours to allow the decaying food to do it's worst. Morning mouth is nothing more than the bacteria getting a jump on your dental hygiene.

Here are a few bad breath cures.

1. Flavored mouthwashes only mask the odor. Rinsing with either a mouthwash or plain water however will loosen some stuck food particles and make your mouth feel fresher and smell better.

2. Regular teeth brushing. If you have an important meeting after lunch, consider taking a vacation toothbrush to the office to make certain your mouth is as clean as possible.

3. Floss your teeth. Flossing is using a piece of string like material to rub between each set of 2 teeth. This loosened and removes build up of plaque and decaying food.

4. Wash your tongue! That's right, many of those smelly bacteria are literally on the tip of your tongue. Washing your tongue is easy using a terry cloth washcloth and plain water. You can brush your tongue if you so desire but washing or brushing, just remember it's important to do.

5. If teeth brushing isn't an option, try chewing gum. Sugarless gum can loosen food matter from between your teeth and also mask any odors from that strong jalapeno sandwich you had for lunch.

Don't use gum with sugar however. The sugars in the gum is like more food for the bacteria and can actually make your breath smell worse.

How can you tell if you have Halitosis? One quick way is to lick the back of your hand and smell it. If it's not pleasant to you, the owner, it's probably not welcome to anyone around you either.

In the end, good dental hygiene that includes regular teeth brushing, flossing and tongue washing will go a long way to keeping your breath kiss-ably fresh!

Bad Breath

Bad Breath is a very unpleasant cause of embarrassment. Medically known as Halitosis it is a very common problem seen in many people. Most of the people with bad breath are unaware of this problem and they tend to be told by their friends/family members or acquaintances.

Causes:

There are many causes of bad breath like hunger, gum diseases, food particles trapped in mouth and hormonal changes. Some foods like garlic and onions contribute to bad breath. The food you take once is absorbed by the bloodstream, gets transferred to the lungs from which it is expelled when you exhale. This bad odour will stay until the food is eliminated from your body and even brushing and flossing will not help much. You should watch what you eat and when you eat. Sometimes not eating for a long time can also cause bad breath. Dieters may develop unpleasant breath from infrequent eating. Develop the habit of brushing and flossing after every meal as the food particles remain in the mouth collecting bacteria, which can cause bad breath. These particles rot in the mouth leaving an unpleasant odour.

Dry mouth can also cause bad breath. Saliva is very necessary to cleanse your mouth and remove particles that may cause odour. See a dentist immediately if you suffer from dry mouth and increase your fluid intake. Smoking also causes dry mouth and thus bad breath. So if you use tobacco, ask your dentist for tips on kicking the habit. Tips for Oral hygiene:

Oral hygiene if maintained properly, risks of bad breath are lowered considerably. Some tips get rid of bad breath are:

Maintain a good oral hygiene: It is very essential to reduce bad breath. Go for regular dental check ups and cleaning. Avoid eating food that causes bad odour.keep a check of what you eat and when. Even some medications may play a role in creating mouth odors so you always rinse and gargle after taking such medicines. Let your dentist know if you have had any surgery or illness since your last appointment.

Brush and floss properly: Make it a habit to brush twice daily and never forget to brush before going to bed. Use fluoride toothpaste to remove food debris and plaque. Use dental floss to get rid of any food particles sticking between your teeth or gums.

Tongue cleaning: Use a tongue cleaner always to remove food particles from the cervices on the tongue.

Fluid intake: Increase your fluid intake to get rid of dryness of mouth. Drink at least 10 glasses of water everyday.

Dental checkup: Never miss your appointment with the dentist. Go for regular check up as it is very essential to keep oral diseases away.

Bad breath isn't something anyone wants to deal with, either in themselves or in someone else. Despite our desires, however, it really is a fact of life at least occasionally. While some people certainly do suffer from chronic bad breath, most of us don't. Along with basic oral hygiene, I've outlined a few ideas below for people suffering from isolated instances.

I should make it clear, however, that if you do follow the basic oral hygiene below and still suffer from chronic bad breath, you should consult your family doctor. Bad breath can actually be a symptom of many serious illnesses and it's something you should have your doctor explore it. This article is geared towards the average person who just needs the occasional freshening up.

If you're not keeping up on your oral hygiene, then you have no right to complain about your bad breath, so let's start there. At bare minimum, you should be brushing your teeth every morning and every evening. You should probably do more than that, but we'll call this the absolute bottom line. Also, when you brush, you should brush over your tongue as well because it can play host and home to all kinds of little nasties.

Once you've taken care of the bottom line, you need to know that many things throughout the day are going to have an effect on your breath. The most effective (albeit anal-retentive) option is to carry a toothbrush and toothpaste with you at all times. This way, after a drink, snack or cigarette, you can fully brush your teeth.

For most of us, however, we prefer a pocket sized option that doesn't require a quick trip to the bathroom. Generally, the options we have under these criteria are gum, mints and mint-strips.

Gum loses its flavor and effect quickly and the actual act of chewing is generally considered unprofessional, at best, and downright rude, at worst. You also have to make sure that you have ready access to a waste basket and regular gum chewing can make you feel bloated, as you take in quite a bit of air while you chew.

Mints are better as they last longer and don't have the same social stigma, but they can often take quite awhile to dissolve. We can shortcut this by biting through them, but this usually leads to a mint-burst that is downright painful. Also, mints tend to be the highest in calories of our three options, which makes them the least healthy.

Mint strips are my choice as they combine the best of both worlds. They work fast, like gum, but dissolve in an instant unlike mints. They are almost free of calories, require no trashcan and tend to last for a long time. The tiny packaging is the final bonus which steers me towards them.

That must be an uneasy life you?re living in.

I have some tips, some fantastic tips, which can help you get the freshest breath ever:

? Find the cause!

Yes, this is the first thing you should do.

The cause could be acidic foods. Acids will help the bacteria in your mouth to reproduce at a faster rate. You need to neutralize the acids in your mouth so that sulphur compounds are discouraged from growing.

So, try to avoid coffee, both regular and decaf. Also, there are other beverages to avoid such as tomato juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, and grapefruit juice

? Get a healthy mouth!

Sometimes, the bad breath problem might come from an unhealthy mouth. So, make sure that you brush your teeth and visit the dentist regularly for a check up.

Sometimes, kids also have problems with their breath. Mostly their bad breath is the cause of the lack of dental hygiene. Get them visit the dentist right away.

? Avoid high protein foods!

Some high protein foods cause sulphur compounds to grow at a very fast rate. And, for you, this means an environment in your mouth that is ideal for bacteria to grow and multiply.

Milk, cheese, and other diary products are at the top of the list when it comes to high protein foods that you should avoid. Also, you need to avoid fish for it?s high in protein.

To make sure you get enough protein, substitute the above foods with tofu.

? Try folk remedies!

One of the most popular folk remedies is the use of apple cider vinegar. After each meal get a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar either straight or diluted in a glass of water.

Brushing your teeth with baking soda also can help you reduce or eliminate the bad breath.

? Get herbal remedies!

This can also be a good option to reduce bad breath.

You can try anise seeds to kill the bacteria in your mouth. Or, get cloves for it?s known as antiseptic.

Maybe you can try sucking a lemon wedge with a bit salt. Others also try to get rid of bad breath by chewing a few springs of parsley or some fennel leaves.

Choose one or try all. That won?t matter, as long as you can have a fresh wonderful breath that you won?t be embarrassed about anymore!

Coated Tongue and Bad Breath

Look at yourself in the mirror and stick out your tongue - do you have a coated tongue and bad breath? Many people who suffer from bad breath (halitosis) have a visible white coating on the back of the tongue. Even if you don't see anything, you do have a coating, sometimes referred to as a biofilm, on your tongue made up of myriad different microscopic organisms, the remnants of food and body cells, and a noncellular matrix that holds it all together.

Some of the organisms living on your tongue are potential pathogens - organisms that can cause infection and halitosis, in fact, the tongue is the site of the greatest number of microorganisms living in the mouth. This is why it is so beneficial to use a tongue cleaner to remove the biofilm, particularly if you have a visibly coated tongue and bad breath. Studies have shown that regular physical removal of the coating brings about a significant reduction in numbers of pathogenic bacteria in the mouth, and in the degree of halitosis.

Physical tongue cleaning will be more effective against your bad breath coated tongue and oral microorganisms because the noncellular matrix of the biofilm actually protects the organisms within it from mouthwashes, natural immune cells and the cleaning action of saliva - think of a firm jelly-like substance enclosing everything in a thin impermeable layer. A good tongue cleaner or tongue scraper gets past the barrier of the matrix by just scraping it all away and alleviating the coated tongue and bad breath. Meanwhile, lower layers that become exposed will be vulnerable to antibacterial substances in the mouth such as saliva or mouthwash while the biofilm is reestablishing itself.

And it will reestablish itself - no tongue cleaner or antibacterial product will ever completely eradicate the unwelcome organisms in your mouth that are causing bad breath coated tongue and even periodontal disease. It is possible, however to keep the numbers of these organism down with a regular program of good oral hygiene including tongue scraping and the use of a mouthwash that targets the bacteria that cause a heavily coated tongue and bad breath.

Bad Breath Halitosis - The Proper Treatment

Cure Your Bad Breath In 3 Days, Click Here To Know More

>>  Click Here To Know The Symptoms, Causes & Effective Cures For Bad Breath <<

Bad Breath, also known as Halitosis (Halitosis is the medical term for 'bad breath') is an extremely restrictive condition, and it affects millions of people. It restricts people from leading a normal life. Have you ever shied away from a conversation because you knew you had bad breath ? Or have you ever cut a conversation short because the person you spoke to had bad breath ? There wouldn't be a person on the planet who hasn't. Bad breath is a social turn-off.

And it doesn't just restrict people in their social lives, it has far-reaching ramifications for Business people who deal face-to-face with customers. I mean, what chance does a Salesperson have when they have bad breath ? I bet they would have a better chance of closing a deal if they had fresh clean breath.

There is a massive misconception about what really causes halitosis. Some definitions point towards poor oral hygiene, general neglect of the teeth, periodontal disease (gum disease), deeply furrowed tongue, sinus infection, tonsillitis, diet, drying of oral tissues, digestive problems, smoking, systemic diseases, lung or sinus infection, uremia, or cirrhosis of the liver, helminthiasis (intestinal parasitic infections), diabetes, kidney failure, sinusitis, tonsilloliths, gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), trimethylaminuria (TMAU), hormonal changes, and a wide variety of prescription drugs........

There are volumes and volumes of studies and reports on what causes halitosis, and what fixes halitosis, and there are hundreds, if not thousands of so-called solutions for treating bad breath. Gum, Breath mints, breath strips and mouthwash are NOT the answer. They are just part of a multibillion-dollar-a-year industry which provide a very short 'mask' for the real cause. Did you know that most commercial mouthwashes contain more alcohol than a six-pack of beer?, or did you know that most commercial toothpastes contain a 'soap' that actually dries out your mouth? But when it comes down to pure logic and basic sense, there appears to be just one stand-out proponent of a bad-breath 'fix', and the evidence to support this is so simple to understand. Dr. Harold Katz proposes that bad breath (halitosis) is caused by the reaction of (i) naturally occurring bacteria in your mouth with (ii) certain proteins that are found in foods we eat, as well as in mucus/phlegm, blood and broken-down oral tissues. And that's it.

The bacteria that is found in our mouths is necessary for the initial stages of digesting the foods we consume. But sometimes the reaction of these bacteria and certain proteins will result in the odorous sulfur compounds being present in our mouths, and these compounds cause bad breath. Dr Katz calls these "volatile sulfur compounds" (VSC), and the 'fix' is quite complex, but at the same time it is simple. What you obviously need to do is stop the bacteria/protein mix from creating the odorous VSC. The way this is done is by adding "oxygen" to the environment they live in (tongue/throat). By adding oxygen, the end result is the formation of a "Sulfate", which has no odor or taste.

If this all sounds too scientific, then you need to read the FREE Bad Breath Bible. This ebook explains bad breath in simplistic terms, and demonstrates just how simple a bad breath solution can be. The solution can be as simple as changing from a soap-filled toothpaste that dries your mouth out, to one that actually assists in converting odorous sulfur compounds into odor-free/taste-free sulfate. You brush your teeth everyday, so it's not like you will need to change you habits to enjoy this bad breath solution.a contributing writer for http://www.badbreath-halitosis.info, an informative website about Bad Breath Halitosis and the cure.

Bad breath, also known as Halitosis in medical terminology, is an unpleasant odor that exits the mouth while breathing. This occurrence can be both embarrassing and troubling to many who suffer from the airborne nuisance. There are different types of bad breath, which occur for different reasons and therefore require different treatments.

Temporary bad breath is commonly caused by a dry mouth, poor oral hygiene, certain types of food and/or smoking. Any one or a combination of these can result in bad breath. Another common type of temporary bad breath is known as morning breath, which occurs first thing in the morning as an individual opens his/her eyes. Chronic bad breath is often caused by certain medical conditions, medications and/or oral buildup.

The determination of bad breath is often made by the person who suffers from it. A dryness or pasty feeling in the mouth and/or an unpleasant taste are both symptoms of bad breath. The best way for a quick, and temporary, relief is to drink a glass of water. This will restore moisture in the mouth and will help to provide some fast results.

The treatment for bad breath may include regular dental visits and proper cleaning, brushing 2 to 3 times daily or after every meal, regular flossing, a change in food consumption and/or diet regimen. In addition, many bad breath sufferers find that brushing the tongue will help to rid the mouth of bacteria that could later lead to a foul odor. Unfortunately for many who suffer from chronic bad breath due to an illness or necessary medication, the only plan of action against bad breath is to mask the problem as effectively as possible. A mouthrinse, chewing gum or breath freshener may help to reduce the noticeability of bad breath.

Anyone who suffers from bad breath may wish to carry a packet of chewing gum, breath mints and/or breath spray for quick relief. In the event that it isn't always possible to brush after every meal, such as often the case when dining at work or with colleagues, these items will help to mask any odor until the individual is able to properly cleanse their mouth.

The information contained in this article is to be used for reference only. It is not to be used in place of, or in conjunction with, professional medical advice. Anyone who suffers from bad breath that cannot be eliminated with the above methods, or whose condition seems to worsen, should consult a physician for proper diagnosis and/or treatment.

Understand what causes bad breath

Cure Your Bad Breath In 3 Days, Click Here To Know More

>>  Click Here To Know The Symptoms, Causes & Effective Cures For Bad Breath <<

Most people suffer from bad breath at some time in their lives. For something so commonplace, bad breath (or halitosis) isn?t fully understood by the medical community.

Though the reasons for bad breath odor are not completely understood, most unpleasant odors are caused by food debris trapped in the mouth. It is really amazing to find as many as 400 different types of bacteria in an average mouth!

Trouble can occur when several dozen of these bacteria are allowed to flourish. Huge numbers can soon build up, or they may become genetically mutated before they reproduce in a large number.

Many species of these bacteria are usually found on the back of the tongue, where they find protection from normal mouth activity. The rough edges of our tongue usually harbor millions of bacteria, which create toxins by digesting debris, dead cells, and other residues. These toxins are harmful because they create a bad odor in the breath.

The chemical reactions ? technically called anaerobic respiration -of these bacteria will accumulate residual compounds containing smelly sulfides and ammonia. These undesirable compounds often further mix with the breath to form an aerosol (spray of fine particles) further spreading the bad odor.

Other causes of chronic bad breath may be periodontitis (gum disease), diabetes, kidney failure, sinusitis, tonsilloliths, gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), and a wide variety of prescription drugs.

But, as you may expect, the majority of bad breath problems begin in the mouth. As we?ve seen, bad breath originating in the mouth can be traced to a sulfur compound produced by bacteria. Dead and dying bacterial cells release this sulfur compound, which gives the breath a bad odor.

In addition, bacterial plaque, debris and food waste accumulate on the back of the tongue. Large amounts of sulfur compounds can be produced in this area, making it a frequent site of origin for bad breath.

Teeth attract bacteria by containing plaque and debris. If not cleaned regularly and thoroughly, this can result in large accumulations of bacteria which result in bad breath.

People who have Periodontitis disease often experience bad breath because of bacteria accumulating in areas that are not cleaned easily, such as deep fissures around teeth.

If your bad breath is originating in your mouth, you will be glad to know that very effective treatment is available.

You can use commercially available breath fresheners or mouth washes for temporary relief from bad breath. However, most of them are just that and act by masking the smell producing layers of tongue, once the effect wears off, the bad breath will resurface with renewed vigor.

Using anti-bacterial mouth rinses may provide you better results in controlling bad breath. Always avoid alcohol containing mouth rinses as alcohol is a drying agent and will worsen the problem sooner or later.

Acute bad breath may be temporarily controlled by using a hydrogen peroxide rinse in your mouth. Hydrogen peroxide at a minute concentration of 1.5% can be taken as an oral antiseptic by gargling 10 ml, for a few minutes.

Never forget to brush your teeth after meals and a regular flossing at least once in a day will remove putrefying food debris from between the teeth, especially at the gum line and rear of the tongue.

Gently cleaning the tongue surface twice daily with a tongue brush, tongue scraper or tongue cleaner will help you keep your tongue and teeth in good shape and health.

Alternatively, you can also use an inverted teaspoon to scrap the surface of your tongue. Tooth brush will not work well in scraping the back of your tongue as the bristles will not reach the back parts of your tongue. Be careful to avoid scraping the V-shaped row of taste buds found at the extreme back of the tongue. Brushing a small amount of antibacterial mouth rinse or tongue gel onto the tongue surface will further inhibit bacterial action.

Since a dry mouth can increase bacterial buildup and cause or worsen bad breath, chewing sugarless gum can help with the production of saliva, and thereby help to reduce bad breath. Some gums, toothpastes, sprays, and gels which combat dry mouth for several hours have recently been marketed over the counter.

Maintain water levels in the body by drinking several glasses of water a day. Adding lemon juice to your water is refreshing and also beneficial. Parsley is a natural breath freshener when chewed slowly, and is easy to grow at home.

Some studies have shown eating yoghurt, drinking green tea, or chewing cinnamon or sugarless cinnamon gum can also reduce bad breath.

Children And Halitosis, Bad Breath

Children can have bad breath just as easily as their parents. When the Webmaster of badbreathgone.com asked me to write an article on halitosis (bad breath) and children, my first thought was, "Great, a no brainer!" As an RN and mother who also works in close contact with children in a daycare, I've got plenty of good insight into halitosis in our little ones.

When you smell the breath of a healthy child it smells fresh and clean. If it doesn't, then use this checklist of the most probable causes of the halitosis/bad breath:

1. Dehydration.(which is more common than most people suspect) 2. Overeating and consequent poor digestion. 3. Eating food that promotes yeast/ candida. 4. Incipient or undiagnosed illness/ infection, low immune system. 5. Too much sugar. 6. Dental problems. 7. Not well-rested, too much activity.

As a parent and RN I often try to smell a child's breath. I can tell you that the children who come to the ER with bronchitis or asthma all have halitosis/ bad breath. Why? Because they have an infection and/or food allergy, and 9 times out of 10 are dehydrated.

So what can parents and caregivers do to give our children sweet smelling breath?

1. Be sure your child drinks enough water - and I mean water - not juices or soda. Juices, and soda particularly, dehydrate your child and load up the system with sugar. And sugar provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, viruses and parasite fungus/ yeast and candida.

2. Monitor your child's eating. Too much food, or food eaten too often, will not digest properly, and will ferment and create toxicity that smells bad.

3. Sugar - again. White sugar increases halitosis, and also nourishes infections and yeast infections/ candida. Cut it down, or better, cut it out if you want fresh breath (and many other benefits besides).

4. Halitosis is a sign that the body needs something. It could be as simple as more water, or perhaps the entire immune system needs a boost. See my article on flu to help boost your child's immune system.

5. Be sure to have regular dental check-ups. I could say much more about this, but let's keep it simple. Just follow through and make those appointments.

6. Watch how your child is doing...? Too much activity? Not enough quality rest? Some kind of emotional distress? Imbalances both physical and emotional can "sour" the stomach, turning good food into bad. I've found that bad breath can provide great motivation for parents to get closely tuned to their children and really work for their well-being.

Some simple remedies to freshen the mouth are a drop of Oil of Oregano under the tongue or on the toothbrush, and chewing on a clove. While drugstores have whole shelves full of products to sweeten halitosis/ bad breath, many products contain ingredients that I would not myself take. Be careful - if you routinely ingest a small amount of "helpful" toxins, that can really add up as the days run to weeks, months and years.

Homoeopathy For Bad Breath

Cure Your Bad Breath In 3 Days, Click Here To Know More

>>  Click Here To Know The Symptoms, Causes & Effective Cures For Bad Breath <<

The protein in the food debris are degraded by the anaerobic bacteria present in the mouth.Offenssive odor is produced due to release of some gases like hydrogen sulphide, skatol ect due to bacterial activity.Formation of a thin sticky membrane on the tongue favoures bacterial growth.Bactrera are also seen in the crypts of tonsils ,dental caries, dental pockets ect.Bad breath is associated with oral hygiene, caries, gingivitis, tonsillitis, tonsillar plaques, food habits, water intake ,tobacco chewing, stomach and liver diseases and ect.

Homoeopathy is a system of medicine introduced by a german physician Dr Samuel Hahnemann.Homoeopathy treats the diseased individual as a whole rather than treating diseased parts or organs. The physical, mental, emotional, social spheres of a person is considered for a permanent cure. This system believes that the diseases are caused due to the derangement of vital force which is an invisible power in every individual. In a healthy state the vital force maintains the equilibrium of mind body and soul .During this man will have normal sensations and functions. When the vital force gets affected there will be external manifestations in the form of signs and symptoms. The imbalance in the body functions makes a shelter for forign organisms(bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa ect) and allow them to proliferate &produce so called diseases.Homoeopathy believes thet the real desease comes before the bacteria & viruses, hence the root cause of the disease has to be treated for a permenent cure. The antibacterial and antiviral agents only remove the secondary causes mentioned above.

Diseases are produced by noxious morbific agents called Miasms which are dynamic influences which affect the vital force. There are mainly three miasms PSORA ,SYPHILIS&SYCOSIS. These three causes are accepted by other schools of medicine but called by different names. Psora causes functional disturbances, syphilis cause structural changes in the form of destructions and sycosis causes changes in the form of overgrowth. These three miasms can act individually or in combined form producing different disease conditions.

To treat bad breath with homoeopathic medicine is easy if correct remedy in suitable dose is given. In the homoeopathic medical repertory by Dr Robin Murphy there are 140 homoeopathic drugs mentioned for bad breath. So just giving one drug for bad breath may not give good result. To come to a correct remedial diagnosis we should have the symptomatology of the person .It is the total symptoms of a person which includes mental generals, physical generals, particular symptoms ect.Bad breath is considered as a physical general symptom .Eventhough it comes only from a part of the body it affects the whole individual.

Symptoms related with appetite, thirst, bowels ect are included in physical generals. All signs and symptoms (mental&physical)of the person is taken in detail.Knowledge about past illneses, family history of diseases, food & bowel habits, relation to climatic changes and constitution ect are noted down in a systematic order.

Mental symptoms:

example: fear,anxiety,depression,anger,jealousy and ect....

Physical symptoms:

example: Body makeup, appetite, thirst, desires, aversions, bowels, urination, sleep, taste, nature of smell, discharges any abnormal sensations like pain, burning ,climatic changes, thermal relations, and ect....

Peculiar uncommon symptoms:

This is the speciality of homoeopathic system of medicine. For the selection of a suitable remedy these symptoms are very important. Common symptoms which are seen almost in all patients are least important.

particular/local signs&symptoms:

This include signs &symptoms related to body parts &organs.

example: Coating on the tongue, nature of mucus membrane of oral cavity, tonsils, gums, teeth, ulcers, discolourations ect are considered here.

Systemic & general physical examination:-

Bad breath can be due to various systemic and disorders.Hence all systems ( respiratory system ,digestive system, nervous system, cardio vascular system and ect )and parts from head to foot should be examined.

provisional disease diagnosis; Here probable diseases are diagnosed. In homoeopathy disease diagnosis is not that much important for the selection of a remedy, but needed for general management and to know the prognosis.

Investigations:

This includes lab investigations and other methods to find out any other major illnesses. Final disease diagnosis:

After doing all investigations the disease is diagnosed.

Remedial diagnosis:

This is the most importnant part as far as homoeopathy is concerned. For this the selected symptoms are arranged in a systematic order on the basis of importance. symptoms are analysed to find out the importance of each symptom for the selection of a remedy.Remedies are selected on the basis of similarity.[the basic principle of homoeopathy is 'similia similibus curenter' means like cures like.A medicine which can produce some symptoms in a healthy man can be used as a remedy to trea the similar symptoms in a diseased person. Each homoeopathic drug is proved on healthy human beings and the symptoms collected by this process(drug proving) is written in meteria medica.]

Suitable remedies are diagnosed by a process called repertorisation. Here books called repertories are used. Repertory is the index of symptoms of materia medica(books which contain the symptoms of drugs).Nowadays computer softwares are used for repertorisalion.By this process we will get the remedies covering maximum important symptom of the patient.

Amoung this group of remedies the most suitable remedy is selected by referring various books and history of the patient..The selected medicine is given in suitable potency & dose.

ANTI MIASMATIC TREATMENT:

The root cause of disease is miasms which should be eradicated using suitable anti miasmatic drugs.Every drug can eradicate the miasm if there is symptom similarity.there are anti psoric drugs, anti syphilitic drugs and anti sycotic drugs. After diagnosing the miasm suitable anti miasmatic drug has to be given to complete the cure.

[In homoeopathy medicines are prepared from different sources like minerals, plants, animals, toxins, diseased parts ect. Medicines are prepared from these substances by a special process called potentisation. Here the soluble substances are potentised by diluting with spirit and insoluble substances by grinding with sugar of milk. The crude drug substance is first mixed with a calculated quantity of spirit and water and kept for few days .From this mixture extract is taken and is called mother tincture(denoted as Q).From this mother tincture dilutions are prepared by potentisation.Potentisation is a mathematical process by which the quantity of original drug substance reduces but medicinal power increases. Depending upon the ratio of quantity of drug substance and vehicle(spirit or sugar of milk)there are different scales for this process. Each scale has got different potencies which indicate power of medicine.Example in decimal scale 3x,6x.12x ect.in centisimal scale there is 30c,200c ect,in LM poteny there are 0/1,0/2,0/3 ect.potency is written after the name of every medicine]

Same medicine is available in different potencies. Suitable potency is selected according to so many facters like sevearity, depth of disease, condition of the patient ,nature of disease ,type of symptoms, age of patient and ect.

Using Natural Remedies To Fight Bad Breath

Bad breath can be caused by anything from bad dental hygiene to medicines you are taking to the food you eat. While it can be embarrassing, it can also indicate a serious condition and should be checked by a doctor. Barring any severe medical reasons, here are some tips you can use to fight bad breath.

Drink lots of water and avoid letting your stomach get too empty. When you don't eat, your saliva production decreases and saliva can help wash away that bacteria in your mouth. Make sure your mouth does not get too dry by drinking lots of water throughout the day which is good for your overall health anyway.

You may also be able to fight bad breath by drinking the right kinds of liquids. We all know that tea is good for you but the chemical polyphenols found in tea can also help to prevent that sulfur producing bacteria that contributes to bad breath. Cranberries reduce the stickiness of bacteria so drinking cranberry juice can help reduce the amount of plaque that is formed and thus reduce the amount of bad breath.

Instead of chewing gum why not take a cue from the ancient Greeks and chew Anise seed? The can be found in the spices section of your grocery store and can be carried with you and popped in your mouth for chewing whenever the mood strikes. Fennel, cinnamon and cloves can do the job as well. Try chewing on these natural treat as an after dinner mint instead of gum or mints which can promote tooth decay.

If you thought parsley was just a garnish on your dinner plate, think again! Parsley has vitamins and minerals but more importantly it has been used for hundreds of years to effectively fight bad breath. The key to this is the chlorophyll which changes carbon dioxide into oxygen inside your body. This prepares the digestive tract to prevent gases and toxins from backing up and by lubricating the tract and various valves.

We all know that baking soda works well to eliminate odor in the fridge, but did you know it can also help eliminate your bad breath? Simply mix some in with your toothpaste when you brush.

Your bad breath may be a problem with digestion and some suggest taking a probiotic. A probiotic will put tons of live bacteria in to your digestive system. This bacteria is vital for good digestive performance. The most popular probiotic is lactobacillus acidophilus or L acidophilus which is commonly found in yogurt.

Finally, the most important tip is to see your dentist regularly and take proper care of your teeth and gums to prevent bacteria from building up and causing odor. This not only contributes to bad breath but bad oral hygiene can also cause health problems throughout your body.

How To Cure Bad Breath Permanently

As humans, being liked, popular and sought after is a natural desire inherent in each of us. This is why deodorants, toothpastes, gym memberships and fancy cars sell at astronomical rates. This is also why mints are so popular and hardly a day goes by without someone at work, school or in public asking you ?do you have some gum?? You already know what that person may be trying to curb or correct: Bad Breath. (It also relieves you this person didn?t offer you some!)

I wrote once in an article in my blog titled ?You?ve lost the weight but how clean are you on the inside?? that exterior indications-though very convincing and at times correct-don?t necessary depict proper health, as disease may manifest itself in various ways. One strong indication of disease is always stench, as a result, if you suffer from bad breath or as is Medically diagnosed, halitosis, this is a sign that you need to make some drastic dietetic changes or undergo a cleanse to curb this unpleasant occurrence.

Using toothpastes (especially the controversial and hazardous fluorinated ones), mints and chewing-gums to curb bad breath, like any artificial drug for any disease, doesn?t cure this ailment but only masks its symptoms temporarily-only for it to come back in full force. This explains why we as humans become addicted to all sorts of unnatural and oft time hazardous substances ranging from pain killers to alcohol.

The necessary and very effective measures one should take in eliminating bad breath are the following (you can trust this author who even upon waking up doesn?t have the so-called ?morning breath?, falsely and commonly accepted as being natural?nothing my friends could be further from the truth!)

1. Make a change in your diet; for as is known in every culture known to man; ?You are what you eat!? Hippocrates- the Father of Medicine once said: ?Let your foods be your medicine and your medicines your food?, well ?what should I eat?? the uninformed might ask: Plain and simple: alkaline forming/mucus binding foods also known as, you guessed it right (if you?ve read my other articles elsewhere) Fruits and Vegetables.

One common indication of disease besides stench is always mucus and this is introduced into the body by only one means, what you consume, therefore all measures should be taken to eat the foods that not only nourish you but have the added ability and benefit of being able to bind and eradicate the excessive mucus.

I am not trying to be a pro-vegan or vegetarian (heck I?ve smelled bad breath and strong body odor on the most blindly fanatical of both kinds of people before) but, from experiments and being a nature lover, all vegetarian animals-free of human captivity or at least allowed to eat their natural diets (for examples the grazing cattle who consume only grass) DO NOT have any bad breath. For a good example of a suggested daily menu plan, look for my article on ?How to get rid of Acne in 10 days? on this site as space is a constricting factor at this time.

2. Practice basic natural oral hygiene. As I indicated in the core e-book of my site, practitioners of Yoga such as the hard-core ones in India, Africa and even here in the USA know of such ancient techniques of cleansing the body that-though not as necessary for the beginner-are very, very effective for eliminating bad breath.

Type ?kunjar kriya? up in Google and read what this process is. Being an advanced technique that must be practiced under supervision, a simple and less repugnant (if you think) process will be:

- Brushing the teeth with a toothbrush and pure all natural un-iodized Sea-salt or using an African Chewing stick or even a firm toothbrush exclusively. I always get compliments on my dentition and smile and besides my mother?s genes (if I may be so vain) using one of these methods has proven to me to be the safer and more effective methods of dental hygiene as outlined in chapter 11 of the text mentioned elsewhere in this article.

- Massage the gums with your clean index fingers. This essential practice strengthens the gums and cleans out impurities from its pores.

- After this; join the index, middle and ring fingers and massage the back of the tongue thoroughly for the same purpose.

- When you are done with these two procedures, scrape the tongue thoroughly with a tongue scraper designed exclusively for this or a blunt bread-knife. Intermittently, between all the steps above, you should rinse the mouth with warm saline water and ensure to gargle with this solution upon completion.

As you may have observed from the steps above (and in most of my articles) alleviating the symptom of a discomfort such as bad breath is mostly a two-part procedure: A drastic change in the diet (internal) and natural cleansing procedures/exercises (external). To complete the three limbs of Naturopathy, your positive and open-minded approach in reading this article takes care of the positive thinking aspect.

It never ceases to amaze me how the population so naively accepts mere fads, hyped products and so called drugs to eradicate the myriad of our modern day ailments, but take it from a guy who suffered (note the PAST tense) from asthma, acne, bad breath and depression for a long length of time, most if not all common diseases of this age can and will be things of the past if some basic all-natural methods such as the steps above for bad breath are applied. Discover A Supermarket Bad Breath Remedy That Isn't a Mouthwash

>>  Click Here To Know The Symptoms, Causes & Effective Cures For Bad Breath <<

One of the unfortunate things about bad breath is that we may not know we have bad breath until we speak. By this stage, we will have engaged in a social or business situation where we may cause people to recoil from us - even if subconsciously - at the very moment when we are trying to improve our relationship with them. If this group knows us well, this is less of a problem. Friends are more likely to be forgiving of the little things about us that perhaps jar them. But if we don't know these people well, we may have just sullied the all important first impressions that are the crucial beginning of any relationship - social, intimate, or business.

Bad breath is undoubtably a problem - frustrating, and usually recurring. Perhaps it gets covered up by mints and candy, but there are situations when we cannot always be chewing on gum. Its unprofessional in a business meeting, impractical when we're having lunch, and impossible when we're intimate with someone.

Bad breath is caused by bacteria. More specifically, the volatile sulfur compounds that are the result of the breakdown of two sulfur containing amino acids, methionine and cysteine. These bacteria live in the mouth and throat, and because they are anaerobic bacteria, they do not live on the surface of the tongue. They actually exist in the fibers which the tongue is made up of.

The bad news is that you cannot get rid of these bacteria permanently, despite the promise of some bad breath treatments. And you actually wouldn't want to, despite the inconvenience they cause when they are working overtime to produce bitter tasting and bad smelling metabolic byproducts. These bacteria are actually part of the digestive process, which begins in the mouth. You need them, and they need you!

There are things that make this normal aspect of digestion worse, however. Foods like dairy products and eating too much protein. That's why one very common side effect of the high protein Atkins diet is bad breath. The proteins in these foods gives these bacteria more 'fuel' to create even more volatile sulfur compounds. They are just doing their job, with very unpleasant after effects. And coffee contains acids which allow the bacteria to multiply. So for the social situations where you want to minimize bad breath, its a simple thing to avoid these foods and drinks.

Tea, on the other hand, can stop the growth of these bacteria. Researchers in Chicago at the University of Illinois have found that the polyphenols in tea can not only reduce the output of the volatile sulfur compounds by 30%, but they make it harder for the bacteria to multiply. The polyphenols active in this bad breath remedy are catechins and theaflavins. Catchetins are found in both green and black tea, and theaflavins are only found in black tea. So a strategy to prevent bad breath might be to avoid the alcohol at important lunches and dinners, and drink black tea instead! Alcohol, because it dries your mouth out, will aggravate bad breath.

Stopping Bad Breath Bart

"Pee-ew! You smell like a skunk soaking in sardine nectar for a week."

OK, so I can be a little candid every now and then. It's not something I would say to Attila the Hun during a pre-battle pep rally. But it was not Attila the Hun standing in front of me. It was just my buddy Bart.

"Pee-ew! You have bad breath."

So when the phone rang that night, the last person I expected to greet me in a cheery voice was Bad Breath Bart. "Hey, Happy Guy. I'm feeling great," he said. "Want to guess why?"

"You just won the gold medal for the ten-meter turkey toss?"

"Nope," he replied. "But thanks for the tip. I'll start training for it tomorrow."

"OK, I give up. Why do you feel so great?"

"Because I discovered an easy way to stop bad breath," he declared. "Want to guess how?"

"You bought a book on stopping bad breath and you are following the instructions?"

"Sa-ay, that's a good idea," Bad Breath Bart said. "But that's not it. My plan is even simpler. I covered up my bad breath."

"Bart, that won't work. Since Julius Caesar first invaded Paris and declared 'Veni Vidi Vino', people have been trying to cover up their breath. But mint just is not strong enough."

"Bingo!" he shouted. "Mint is too weak, so I found something stronger. Want to guess what?"

"You've been rinsing with five-week-old milk?"

"Nope."

"You've discovered that cologne is best taken internally?"

"Nope."

"You downed a bottle of vanilla extract, mistaking it for beer?"

"Nope."

This guessing game was giving me headaches. "I give up, Bart. What's your secret to stopping bad breath?"

"Garlic," he declared.

"Garlic?"

"Garlic. Now nobody can smell my bad breath, because all they smell is garlic," he beamed.

"Garlic?"

"Of course, there are some side effects," Bad Breath Bart noted. "For instance, my pet vampire has run away. And this afternoon I blew a kiss to my wife, and she slammed the door on my face."

"Can I offer an alternative, Bart? Something that won't put your nose in a cast every time you get the irresistible urge to blow at your wife?"

"Sure."

"Try using some mouthwash with cetylpyridinium chloride in it. That always works for me."

"Wow. That's a mouthful," Bad Breath Bart exclaimed.

I was glad to have finally given Bad Breath Bart a mouthful that would actually help him cure his problem. I did not anticipate the call I would receive the very next evening.

"Hey, Happy Guy. Thanks for the tip," Bad Breath Bart said. "That cetlip... cettap... centapyr... That unpronounceable mouthwash ingredient is superb."

"Excellent!" I was thrilled that he had taken my advice and that it was working so well.

"Yeah. It really tastes great," he continued.

"Tastes great?"

"You bet. And so filling, too."

Suddenly I felt an ominous sensation closing in. "What do you mean by 'filling'?"

"After taking that cetilp... cettep... certip... that unpronounceable concoction, I don't feel hungry anymore," he explained.

"Bart, what did you put in that concoction?"

"Oh, the usual ? ten scoops of ice cream, a cup of milk, a bag of chocolate chips, half a banana, some corn flakes, a wombat's ear and the juice out of the maraschino cherry jar," he responded.

"But that won't stop your bad breath."

"Oops. I also added that cetip... cetpe... certilp... that unpronounceable ingredient," he added. "It sure tasted good."

Just then, my wife entered the room. "Honey, I just made you one of your favorite banana-strawberry milkshakes," she said with a smile.

I looked at the glass she placed in my hand. I looked at it from the top. I looked at it from the bottom. I looked all around it.

"What are you looking for," she asked.

I knew she would not believe me. Post-Nasal Drip and Its Effect on Bad Breath

Post Nasal Drip and Nasal-Sinus Congestion Will Transform
a Case of 'Normal' Breath into BAD Breath and 'Bad' Breath
into HORRIBLE Breath!

Bad Breath is very closely related to post nasal drip, excess mucus, sinus problems, your tonsils, and
tonsiloliths.

The bacteria which cause bad breath and sour/bitter/metallic tastes are anaerobic (live without oxygen). Their goal in life is to break down the proteins in foods that we eat. However, under certain conditions, they will also start to break down the proteins found in mucus and phlegm.

Therefore, those people who suffer from post nasal drip, sinus problems, and other such ailments are more prone to bad breath and lousy tastes because the bacteria use the mucus as a food source and start to extract sulfur compounds from the amino acids that make up the proteins found in all this excess mucus.

Scientifically, the anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath "love" the amino acids Cysteine and Methionine, which are the building blocks of the proteins that are found in mucus (and phlegm) and in dairy foods, too. In fact, many people notice that when they drink too much milk or eat too much cheese they end up with more mucous or phlegm in their throat. This is a natural reaction for many people and unfortunately, ends up causing more bad breath and lousy taste.

If you still have your tonsils, you may be harboring a higher number of the bacteria which can lead to an
"interesting" and very often misunderstood phenomenon, called TONSILOLITHS. Literally translated, they are "tonsil stones" produced by the conglomeration of mucus draining down the back of the throat and the volatile sulfur compounds created by the bacteria which easily end up in the "nooks and crannies" of the tonsils, every time one swallows. I can't tell you how many stories I've heard from my patients who asked their dentist what these objects were, and more often than not the answer was 'food particles'. This couldn't be further from the truth!

Medication and Drugs MAY help Prevent Post-Nasal Drip, But At What Cost?

There are dozens of different over-the counter nasal decongestants and antihistamines you can use to help relieve congestion and dry up excess mucus, and some of them are very good at what they claim but mostly they are TOO GOOD! They create an extremely dry mouth, which exacerbates bad breath. And even in cases where the dry mouth side effect is minimal, when you stop taking that medication the problem comes back, and almost always with a vengeance! This is because in some cases, your body will actually develop a resistance to any antihistamines or nasal decongestants, especially nasal sprays (be careful, because
many sprays are habit forming!)

Suffice it to say, this should NOT be an option that you pursue.

Use a Nasal-Irrigator to Flush Your Sinuses free from Excess Mucus

Nasal Irrigation is probably the most effective method of eliminating post-nasal drip and helping to control sinus infections. A short period of regular use can stimulate the cilia (the tiny hair-like fibers in the nasal sinus passages) to restore their natural protective "sweeping & cleansing" action.

When you feel a sinus condition come on, or feel that you have persistent post-nasal drip and excess mucus, consistent daily use for 10 days should result in a clearing of the condition.

Stop Bad Breath Associated with Post-Nasal Drip, Excess Mucus, and Sinus Problems

For people who don't really have sinus problems, just "off and on" or seasonal post-nasal drip, then an alternative (and better) solution might be to minimize the amount of excess mucus in the back of the throat and more importantly to make sure you neutralize the odor caused by this excess mucus.

You see, the proteins in mucus make an excellent food source for the anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath. The bacteria feed off the amino acids, Methionine and Cysteine, and create extremely odorous and lousy-tasting Volatile Sulfur Compounds as by-products, which are the odors and lousy tastes found in the medical condition halitosis, which YOU (or maybe everyone around you) more commonly knows as bad breath.

When I first started treating my own daughter's breath problem 10 years ago, I never dreamed that I would end up helping so many people all over the world who had the same problem, which my fellow dentists ignored or misdiagnosed for far too long. It was only a few years into our clinical therapy that I realized that "Every case of bad breath is different and that there is no such thing as one formula to
treat every case of halitosis."

For a decade now, we've been here to help our patients prevent bad breath, sinus congestion, and lousy
tastes. If there is anything we can do to help, please don't hesitate to contact us - that's why we're here!
