Have you experienced having someone close to you- a friend maybe, which happens to own stinky breath?

Or, that you keep a hard time telling some person that she/he has a bad breath? I understand because I had the same experience and no stuff how much we looked-for to tell that someone who has the terrible flaw, we still can t do it, smooth if you can, the brooding of spitting the words out is not easy.

But, before we start sense bad for anyone alongside bad breath, it would be paramount to know the possible bad breath causes. Bad breath, or halitosis, is usually caused by the presence of bacteria in the mouth. Bacteria also consume food and excrete wastes, just like humans do. The wastes produced by the bacteria are sulfur compounds, which are odorous and are usually one of the bad breath causes. But, we still have to consider that there are other factors which affect the odor of one s breath, such as food, smoking, having a dry mouth, gum disease, sinus conditions, untreated medical conditions, etc.

Food is also one of the contributing factors of bad breath. There are some foods known to cause one s mouth to stink, such as garlic and onions- the most common examples. Every time we eat, our digestive system breaks the food that we ate into molecules. If we have eaten odorous foods, the tendency is that these molecules are absorbed into our circulatory system, resulting to their distribution throughout our body as nourishment.

During the circulation process, when the blood travels through our lungs, some of the molecules will be released into them and as a result, when we exhale we let out some of the odorous molecules- simply called bad breath. But this condition is temporary and will be gone in just a matter of day. So, to minimize this problem, try avoiding too much consumption of these kinds of foods.

Smoking maybe one of bad breath causes with which tar, nicotine and other bad smelling substance from tobacco smoke accumulate on the smoker's teeth and oral tissue. But then this can be remedied through proper oral hygiene. On the other hand, smoking can lead to drying of oral tissues and those who smoke have greater risk of having gum disease than those who don t, which are contributing factors to bad breath.

Are you one of those who don't seem to have bad breath issues, yet have offending breath in the morning when you wake up? This is due to the reducing of salivary flow when we sleep, resulting to the drying of your mouth. The presence of moisture found in our mouth, like our saliva, makes us swallow, therefore, helping our mouth cleanse it. Every time we swallow, we also wash away the bacteria with the food with which they feed and the wastes they've produced.

Gum disease or periodontal disease is the second most common of bad breath causes. This disease is a problem mostly for people more than 35 years and above; the older you get the more likely your bad breath is caused by periodontal disease. This is a bacterial infection located in the tissues surrounding your teeth. This gum disease damaged the bones that hold the teeth in place and creating deep spaces between teeth and gums (called periodontal pockets) which can become an ideal ground for bacteria to live.

For all you know sinus condition can contribute to your bad breath. Respiratory infections and allergies can promote the flow of postnasal drip onto the back part of your tongue. The discharge usually has a bad smell and taste, and worse, these are what bacteria will feed from which in turn produce stinky wastes- as a result bad breath!

Untreated medical condition may not be the primary reason of the bad breath causes, yet can be a potential contributing factor. If bad stirring persists even after you have consulted your dentist and tried simple solutions, it s about time you need to consult a doctor. If you have stinky breath, it s impossible that you can t be aware of it for long. From the bad breath causes discussed above, they should give you clearer ideas of the possible underlying reasons why there are people with bad breath.

Although you may want to consult your physician if you have a particular problem with bad breath, the following general advice will give you insight into the likeliest cause of a bad breath problem.

The principal bad breath cause is associated with bacteria in the mouth. This can flourish when the saliva flow in the mouth is reduced. Lack of saliva means that old food is not washed away, and saliva also helps in neutralizing acids. Saliva also performs the very necessary task of flushing out the mouth, and removing food particles, so any reduction in saliva flow inhibits this action.

Saliva can be reduced for a number of reasons. There are natural causes of this reduction, and other causes related to disease or choices. The flow of saliva reduces naturally as we get older, making us more prone to bad breath. Also when we are dehydrated, the moisture in the mouth reduces naturally. Often when asleep, people will have their mouths open, maybe even snoring, and this will dry out the mouth. This contributes to the "morning breath" syndrome.

Certain diseases and illnesses can similarly contribute to bad breath. Any infection that affects the respiratory tract can be a cause of bad breath, as well as many other diseases.

Dry mouth can also be caused by medications for various problems. The most common is probably the antihistamine, taken to relieve allergies. Some others include high blood pressure and depression medicines. Other things that can be ingested that affect the dryness of the mouth include alcohol and mouthwashes that contain alcohol.

One of the many problems associated with cigarette smoking is dry mouth. For many reasons unrelated to bad breath, it is wise to avoid smoking, as has been documented extensively elsewhere. With a predisposition to bad breath, however, the habit of smoking virtually guarantees that you will suffer from bad breath.

It is no good to think that the bacteria causing bad breath may be generally eliminated, as they are naturally occurring and required for bodily function. They are anaerobic, which means "without oxygen". As saliva provides oxygen the lack of saliva with a dry mouth makes a more favorable environment for the bacteria to increase, aggravating the bad breath.

The bacteria create sulfurous compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide (the bad egg smell) which are the cause of the smelly breath. The bacteria assist in the digestive process by starting the breakdown of proteins. Thus another cause of bad breath would be a high protein diet, which feeds the bacteria.

Even people who religiously and meticulously care for their teeth and gums can still suffer from bad breath. The food we eat is one contributing factor but there are others. People who suffer from certain health problems such as diabetes may suffer uncontrollably from bad breath and there is little respite for these people. Gum disease or a build up of plaque can't always be removed by regular brushing and unless you floss and rinse it is unlikely you are getting rid of all these odor creators. You should floss every time you brush and buy a tongue scraper. Anything that cleans the tongue is good as a tongue scraper but there are dedicated scrapers available from most stores.

If you have a health problem that is the cause of your bad breath then you should consult your doctor and not your dentist. Obviously, your dentist will be able to tell you if your bad breath is caused by your mouth or by another problem and is your likely first port of call.

Chewing gum only really serves to mask the smell of bad breath and not fix it, despite adverts to the contrary. The sugar in gum causes cavities and these cavities are like little shelters for bacteria. If you eat gum with sugar replacements you may find that your body reacts badly to them and you end up with digestion problems that can also cause bad breath.

Consider changing your diet. If you regularly eat garlic or onions then your breath is likely to smell regardless of whether you brush and floss regularly or not. Eating sweet foods will produce cavities and other problems where bacteria can hide and rot giving bad breath.

Don't just brush your teeth. Use dental floss to get rid of the bacteria that collects between your teeth and use a tongue scraper to get right to the back of the tongue. A special tongue scraper is better than the back of a special toothbrush because of the ease of use. A toothbrush is cumbersome in comparison to these items and unless you give your teeth and mouth the whole works you are unlikely to get rid of bad breath.

Post Nasal Drip and Nasal-Sinus Congestion Will Transform
a Case of 'Normal' Breath into BAD Breath and 'Bad' Breath
into HORRIBLE Breath!

Bad Breath is very closely related to post nasal drip, excess mucus, sinus problems, your tonsils, and
tonsiloliths.

The bacteria which cause bad breath and sour/bitter/metallic tastes are anaerobic (live without oxygen). Their goal in life is to break down the proteins in foods that we eat. However, under certain conditions, they will also start to break down the proteins found in mucus and phlegm.

Therefore, those people who suffer from post nasal drip, sinus problems, and other such ailments are more prone to bad breath and lousy tastes because the bacteria use the mucus as a food source and start to extract sulfur compounds from the amino acids that make up the proteins found in all this excess mucus.

Scientifically, the anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath "love" the amino acids Cysteine and Methionine, which are the building blocks of the proteins that are found in mucus (and phlegm) and in dairy foods, too. In fact, many people notice that when they drink too much milk or eat too much cheese they end up with more mucous or phlegm in their throat. This is a natural reaction for many people and unfortunately, ends up causing more bad breath and lousy taste.

If you still have your tonsils, you may be harboring a higher number of the bacteria which can lead to an
"interesting" and very often misunderstood phenomenon, called TONSILOLITHS. Literally translated, they are "tonsil stones" produced by the conglomeration of mucus draining down the back of the throat and the volatile sulfur compounds created by the bacteria which easily end up in the "nooks and crannies" of the tonsils, every time one swallows. I can't tell you how many stories I've heard from my patients who asked their dentist what these objects were, and more often than not the answer was 'food particles'. This couldn't be further from the truth!

Medication and Drugs MAY help Prevent Post-Nasal Drip, But At What Cost?

There are dozens of different over-the counter nasal decongestants and antihistamines you can use to help relieve congestion and dry up excess mucus, and some of them are very good at what they claim but mostly they are TOO GOOD! They create an extremely dry mouth, which exacerbates bad breath. And even in cases where the dry mouth side effect is minimal, when you stop taking that medication the problem comes back, and almost always with a vengeance! This is because in some cases, your body will actually develop a resistance to any antihistamines or nasal decongestants, especially nasal sprays (be careful, because
many sprays are habit forming!)

Suffice it to say, this should NOT be an option that you pursue.

Use a Nasal-Irrigator to Flush Your Sinuses free from Excess Mucus

Nasal Irrigation is probably the most effective method of eliminating post-nasal drip and helping to control sinus infections. A short period of regular use can stimulate the cilia (the tiny hair-like fibers in the nasal sinus passages) to restore their natural protective "sweeping & cleansing" action.

When you feel a sinus condition come on, or feel that you have persistent post-nasal drip and excess mucus, consistent daily use for 10 days should result in a clearing of the condition.

Stop Bad Breath Associated with Post-Nasal Drip, Excess Mucus, and Sinus Problems

For people who don't really have sinus problems, just "off and on" or seasonal post-nasal drip, then an alternative (and better) solution might be to minimize the amount of excess mucus in the back of the throat and more importantly to make sure you neutralize the odor caused by this excess mucus.

You see, the proteins in mucus make an excellent food source for the anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath. The bacteria feed off the amino acids, Methionine and Cysteine, and create extremely odorous and lousy-tasting Volatile Sulfur Compounds as by-products, which are the odors and lousy tastes found in the medical condition halitosis, which YOU (or maybe everyone around you) more commonly knows as bad breath.

When I first started treating my own daughter's breath problem 10 years ago, I never dreamed that I would end up helping so many people all over the world who had the same problem, which my fellow dentists ignored or misdiagnosed for far too long. It was only a few years into our clinical therapy that I realized that "Every case of bad breath is different and that there is no such thing as one formula to
treat every case of halitosis."

For a decade now, we've been here to help our patients prevent bad breath, sinus congestion, and lousy
tastes. If there is anything we can do to help, please don't hesitate to contact us - that's why we're here!
